Seasonal Guide

Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.€ - George Eastman

del Sol Photographers have experienced just about every lighting condition with more than 600+ weddings. This section will introduce you to some of our thoughts about the seasons here in the Rivera Maya. If you want to consider the OPTIMAL light for photography in the evening, 30 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after sunset, so called the "golden hour")

For planning the start time of your ceremony, we would like you to consider a few things:
If your ceremony time will be under 15 minutes, we recommend starting the wedding 50-60 minutes before the scheduled sunset. If your ceremony time will be 20-30 min, we recommend starting the wedding 55-65 minutes before the scheduled sunset. We will always work with any time variance outside our suggested timeframes. As photojournalists, we are prepared to handle any situation at any time. Our style is to go with the flow, no matter what the conditions.

We usually recommend against having a wedding ceremony in the direct sun from 11am - 4pm in the summer / hot months (May - October). Please also understand that there are many atmospheric conditions that dramatically change the color of the sky and that the weather is totally unpredictable here. Our thoughts here are based on optimal conditions.

January - February - March

The first 3 months of the year in the Riviera Maya render us absolutely speechless as to the weather reaches its most pleasurable temperatures.   Evenings can get down in the 60’s  (15 C).  Nights often warrant long pants and a light long sleeve for guys.  Sol Tamargo usually wears a wrap on as on windy evenings, it feels “cold” for us locals.    Bear in mind that winter has its fists locked hard on USA & Canada.  Days are hot, averaging 75-80 (23-26C).  Nights are mild / cool, depending on wind factor, it may feel 60-66 (16-19C).   DUSK light is totally amazing during this time of year....

Wind can kick up at just about any moment and most of our days our breezy...the nights are breezy too.
Ceremonies usually start from 3:30 to 5pm for us on average during these months.  Daylight fades fast and due to the eastern location within the Central Time Zone, days seem shorter.

April - May - June

*First disclaimer:   Mexico does not recognize early change to daylight savings time.
Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 a.m. local time on the first Sunday in April. On the last Sunday in October areas on Daylight Saving Time fall back to Standard Time at 2:00 a.m.  Remember that the wind on the beach can be stronger some days than others.  Its always breezy here and sometimes, the wind can be overbearing.  If you have chosen a location, make sure you investigate their 2nd option for the ceremony site.

These months are considered del Sol HIGH season for shooting.  15 weddings per month and 10 TTD / Honeymooner sessions per month are typical for del Sol.   We work like MAD basically during these months to take off the summers when its very hot and hurricanes may be likely.

It seems the sunset can peak around 7:30pm in July.  Also consider that the Riviera Maya is on the East side of the Central Time Zone, so evenings generally come early.  Because we use faster lenses, we typically LOVE to shoot 30 minutes into dusk.   Typically, our ceremonies start from 5pm - 7pm during these months.

June - July - August

CAN YOU SAY HOT...  Wow, watch out for the mid day weddings.   The summer is also the high season for rain.  Rain can fall hard and fast and leave before you ever realized it was raining or it can downpour for hours.  We are in the sub tropics and have some crazy weather systems come through.   Wind can be a factor in some beach ceremonies and is unpredictable.

These months are for sure the hottest months of the year.  Seasonal averages are 85 + degrees (32 Celsius).   Watch out for mid day heat as on cloudless days, the sun is in control.   Some hotels sell wedding schedules at 12 pm, or 2pm, or even 3pm.  It seems that the beaches are less crowded during these months.

Disclaimer
We do not recommend planning your wedding to start from 12 noon - 4pm.
Save the guests from having a heat stroke.    Another suggestion...lay off the coats and jackets in these months.    Dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion very quickly.   As crazy as it seems, we have witnessed black suits or tuxedos on the beach in the full hot sun of July, even Khaki coats can be too hot, perhaps consider other options for your guests/attendants.   Also, make sure plenty of water is available if you must have guests in full sun.

Make sure you plan a trip to swim in the Cenotes.  We will recommend Casa Cenote, near Akumal.  Its a natural estuary that borders a road and a small strip of beach.  This cave in this cenote leads under the road and heads into the open ocean.   Further into the jungle, this cenote has a massive current that comes from deep into the mangroves.  A MUST visit, lots of fish and wildlife to see here.

*This wedding was scheduled on Isla Holbox, Yucatan Mexico.

del Sol tries to take vacations in these summer months, but will take reservations.  We shoot weddings in every month of every year.  del Sol turnaround for image delivery is generally 4-6 weeks during these months.

September - October

*Disclaimer:   Mexico does not recognize extended daylight savings time. On the last Sunday in October areas on Daylight Saving Time fall back to Standard Time at 2:00 a.m

Hurricane season is here and the area seems to thin out of tourists and hotels generally offer great discounts to stay in the region.  If you are planning or doing site visits, make sure to use save $$$ by visiting during these times.  Temp seems to be fairly hot with high humidity levels  85 degrees with some degree of fluctuation.    Remember, the weather is totally unpredictable and to always plan a contingency if you are getting married here during these months.   Oct 19 Hurricane Wilma did some pretty substantial damage to the Cancun Area, sparing much damage in the Riviera Maya.

November - December

Check out Sunset times:

November
December

These two months are the beginning of the del Sol high season.  November hotel rates still seem to be lower than January through March.   Also a great time to visit if you are planning or doing any vendor research.   Typically, del Sol will have 8-12 weddings in November and 5-10 in December.

The weather in November & December is very mild, generally.  Days can reach 85 degrees but generally, the average is slightly lower 75-80, give or take.   Breezy evenings may require a light jacket and longer pants.  The ocean water temperature remains warm enough to swim but seems to after December, but year round feels absolutely wonderful to swim in.

Rain can be unpredictable and although they predict less rain during these months, we can recall years where December had lots of quick but consistent rainfall.  Generally, its mild rain though during these months.

We usually take more time off during the holiday months.  Matt & Sol's anniversary is December 6th and they usually take off additional time to travel near Matt's birthday December 18th - Dec 27th.  By the way, Matt & Sol are the same age.  Her birthday is Jan 30.
