“We never really planned on having a theme wedding. But when we joked with our wedding planner that we should book the venue for May 4th (Star Wars Day), because it was the only anniversary we’d remember, she loved the idea and we decided to go all in!”
“We are both big nerds who just wanted a fun, unique wedding and I think we got it!”
“Having a resort wedding is great, because all of the major planning is basically done for you and you are free to just think about the little things to make it special. Also, having our wedding on Star Wars Day made for endless fun details, like naming our tables after spaceships and planets from all the sci-fi books, TV shows, and movies we like and playing up the nerd factor with the favors.”
“I also had already made a ceramic astronaut in pottery, so I figured I’d try out an alien and some his and her robots for the cake. My favorite details were the lights around the orchids in the vases that made them look like star formations and the guest book poster my mom made for us!”
Del Sol: How did you decide on a destination wedding?
“We knew most of the guests would be traveling to our wedding anyway. We figured there might as well be a pool bar for them when they got there!” – Maria
“Also, we knew the wedding day would be hectic, so we wanted to be able to spend as much time with our guests as we could!”
Del Sol: How was your experience with the Del Sol Team?
“It was so great to have such an enthusiastic photographer!”
“As soon as we decided on Playa Del Carmen we knew we wanted Del Sol based on the beautiful pictures we had seen online. After we decided on doing a weird sci-fi wedding we knew we had to have Del Sol, because we didn’t trust anyone else to help us figure out how to make it look cool and not kitschy! Polly and her assistant really took their time to get the right shot!”

“Joyce and her team were amazing to work with! She really took care of everything and we never had to worry about timing or set up! She made everything look gorgeous and let us enjoy the day instead of worrying about the details!”
“The Barcelo wedding coordinator, Simone, was very helpful! She was able to work with Joyce to make sure everything was great and running on time. It was also great to have someone to help us that was stationed at the resort when we had questions before the wedding day!
Del Sol: Any destination wedding top tips?
“For a destination wedding, try to ship your welcome bags and favors early so you aren’t running around with tons of luggage!”
