Why was choosing a cenote wedding in Mexico perfect for David and Erin?
Some couples meet in university…others through friends or from going out and about in public.
Erin and David met through a Facebook tarantula group! From the beginning, they found so much love and joy being in nature together. Getting married in a cenote was a fit for them. The jungle, the tropical birds (mot mots) along with the iguanas and spiders, a cenote in the Mexican jungle becomes the perfect wedding cathedral.
Cenotes are Earth’s most beautiful natural cathedrals
They’re hikers. Birdwatchers. Wildlife lovers. The kind of people who can spend hours looking for frogs, insects, reptiles, or birds and consider it the best day ever. Their first adventure together wasn’t centered around a fancy dinner. It was built around curiosity.
One of my favorite stories they shared happened in the Ecuadorian Amazon. After a few drinks at their eco-lodge, they spent the evening wandering through the rainforest looking for frogs, insects, birds, and whatever else the jungle wanted to reveal. They laughed for hours.
As Erin put it, they were simply “two nature nerds absolutely in our element.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Choosing a cenote ceremony is a way to design a ceremony that bridges a special connection to nature.
Erin and David didn’t choose a cenote because it was trendy. They chose it because it felt like the best option to let them connect with nature. Erin said “David has given me the space and the confidence to be truly myself. I genuinely think he may be the only person who has seen every piece of who I am, and that is because he has made it safe to do so.”
David told us: “I’ve never met someone so unwaveringly uplifting of the people they care about; she is genuinely excited for me when I accomplish something, anything, no matter how small. A better person for me doesn’t exist.”

I’ve photographed cenote weddings for more than two decades, and they still surprise me. The light changes. The jungle changes. Every couple changes the space simply by bringing their own story into it. That’s what keeps me inspired to return, camera in hand, wondering what nature has planned for us next.
