From chic and contemporary to boutique, colonial charm: the Mexican Caribbean has incredible locations for a destination wedding.
As a commercial photographer, I have traveled the world and seen many beautiful, one of a kind, unique boutique luxury hotels in my lifetime. Staying at a hotel vs photographing a hotel teaches you a lot about the layout, how the time of day looks when a wedding might happen at the determined site locations for ceremony and reception. All of those elements play a large role in how the wedding looks and feels in the pictures.
This list is a summary from our experience, if you are staying in the Riviera Maya, what you might look for in a destination wedding location in some of our favorite luxury hotels. -Matt Adcock Co Founder Del Sol Photography
Here are Del Sol Photography’s favorite Luxury Resorts destination wedding locations in Mexico.
Paradisus Resorts – Contemporary Elegance
Paradisus is a luxury all-inclusive resort, perfect for contemporary brides. With modern architecture, bold colors and thoughtful lighting throughout, Paradisus offers diverse ceremony locations and easily accommodates wedding parties of 100+ guests.
The Paradisus complex is comprised of two resorts: family-friendly La Esmeralda and adults-only La Perla. The resort is next-door to downtown Playa del Carmen but still feels like it is in a remote paradise.
The top choice for ceremonies at Paradisus is the wooden deck of the Gabi Bridge, which spans the mangrove and has a beach backdrop without touching the sand. Other gorgeous ceremony spots are the gazebo in the center of the resort and of course the beach itself. The wedding coordination team of Paradisus is world-class, offering highly personalized weddings and a variety of romantic packages. This is a ceremony with amazing light on Paradisus’s Gabi Bridge.
There is a vendor fee for outside photographers at Paradisus
Grand Velas Resort – Luxury on a grand scale
Grand Velas Resort is a suites only, luxury all-inclusive set in lush gardens on a spectacular Riviera Maya beach. With 539 incredible suites, Grand Velas can easily cater for large wedding groups of 100+ guests. The pristine beaches and idyllic jungle setting of Grand Velas is only 5 minutes away from downtown Playa del Carmen.
Destination weddings at Grand Velas are a reflection of the taste of each couple, unique and personal, from an intimate ceremony on the beach to a big celebration for hundreds in the gardens. We loved the Grand Velas Hindu Wedding of Chuck and Karen is one of the most exotic 2 day luxury resort destination weddings
in the gardens and showcases the entire property with the most vibrant mix of culture you can imagine.
Mayakoba – Luxury and Nature in Harmony
Mayakoba is home to three world-class, luxury resorts: Fairmont Mayakoba, Rosewood Mayakoba and Banyan Tree Mayakoba. All three were created with a vision of maintaining the natural beauty of the region, preserving the local flora and fauna, mangroves, lagoons and the 6 miles of freshwater canals.
The architecture at each of the three Mayakoba resorts blend with nature, creating a variety of backdrops for Riviera Maya destination weddings. This Rosewood Mayakoba wedding shows the beauty of the canals and this Fairmont Mayakoba wedding on the beach is magic. The arrival of bride and groom in the wedding processional by boat through the canals is something epic to see, for photo inspiration of the canals you can see this destination wedding at Banyan Tree Mayakoba.
Nizuc Resort and Spa – Chic and stylish luxury in Cancun
One of the newest and most exclusive properties in Cancun, Nizuc Resort and Spa is quickly becoming a venue of choice for destination weddings. Contemporary design surrounded by natural beauty, world-class cuisine and service and one of the most incredible places to capture a sunset in Cancun.
A wedding on the Nizuc Resort pier at sunset is romantic and intimate for a small group of guests, while this large multi-cultural Nizuc wedding shows their wedding coordination team’s expertise in managing weddings of all sizes.

Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa – Your own Personal Paradise
The Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa is a secluded luxury resort destination wedding location, located half way between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. With only 63 guest rooms, including ocean-view and ocean-front suites, the Belmond has an intimate, boutique feel. Extensive gardens and traditional hacienda-style design stays true to the local setting and culture, while their Kinan Spa offers local Mayan healing rituals and was voted the “#1 Best Spa in Mexico and Latin America” by Conde Nast Traveller. We love this beautiful Cosmic Ceremony on the beach at the Belmond.
Viceroy Riviera Maya – The definition of Boutique Luxury
The Viceroy Riviera Maya is adults only, with all private “suite” villas, each with its own butler. There are 41 private villas total, with 7 varieties. Each includes a terrace, plunge pool, hammocks and chaise loungers that are all private. They’re also all unique, fitting naturally into their surroundings and embracing local culture. Have a look at these wedding photos to see why the dock at the Viceroy is one of the most epic ceremony locations to plan a destination wedding, with commanding views of the sunset over the Caribbean Ocean.
Located 45 minutes from Cancun airport and 20 minutes from downtown Playa del Carmen the Viceroy is set on seven miles of white sand beach, settled seamlessly into lush tropical jungle. Blending luxury amenities with a relaxed vibe and local Mayan influences the Viceroy is fully-equipped to host a wedding of any size and even offers to let you book the whole resort for larger weddings. Being a Viceroy, their catering and menus are world-class and offer customizations and special requests. A Mayan beach wedding at the Viceroy was one of our favorite luxury resort destination weddings of 2015.
Esencia – Boutique charm on the Perfect Beach
Esencia is found on one of our very favorite beaches at Xpu-Ha, 15 minutes from Playa del Carmen on the way to Tulum. The bay is free from large resorts and still has an old school, laid back Riviera Maya charm.
The 50-acre Esencia estate was originally the holiday home of an Italian Duchess, now housing 29 suites and the phytotherapy spa which offers Mayan inspired, organic herbal treatments. Caroline and Tyler’s Cosmic Ceremony is one of our favs while Christina and Anthony proved that rain can’t stop the party!
