Hindu weddings are joyous and elaborate occasions, with special events often taking place over several days to celebrate the joining of two families. Palka and Joe invited us to one of the most important pre-wedding ceremonies, the mehendi ki raat or “mehndi” party.
The “mehndi” is intended to be a representation of the outer and inner sun, centered around the idea of “awakening the inner light”. Delicate designs are made on the hands and feet in henna, a temporary work of art on the skin. Mehndi parties are also a great excuse for fun with dancing and music, a vibrant way to begin a life together.
