Mahekal Beach Resort

Mahekal Beach Resort is a slice of original Playa del Carmen charm in the heart of the downtown.

Before Tulum, there was Playa del Carmen – the bohemian Tulum that we know and love today was modeled after the original Playa del Carmen style – rope swings and all.

More than 3 decades ago Mr Lubke saw the amazing Shangri La beach  from a boat. He stepped onto the sand and created Mahekal Beach Resort. He was inspired by the fishing village that was Playa del Carmen and built a hotel that reflected Playa’s style. As Playa del Carmen grew from the charming village into a bustling city, Mahekal Beach Resort is the is the only resort in Playa that still has that original bohemian charm, albeit with a modern twist.

Mahekal has just finished a  three-year, $18 million refurbishment. The Tulum style palapas and boutique, bohemian style are an oasis of calm in the heart of the bustling downtown. Mahekal now boasts 196 rooms. 74 individual palapa-style cabañas, premium suites steps from the beach and standard rooms nestled in the Riviera Maya jungle. The vibe of the resort is described by the hotel as “GypSet Style,” embracing and mixing eclectic decoration and the colors of Mexico. Mahekal offers family friendly boutique style and flexibility!

Why choose Mahekal Beach Resort Playa del Carmen for your destination wedding or event?

Mahekal gives you the best of both worlds. The famous Caribbean laid back beach style is often associated with Tulum rather than Playa del Carmen. However, Mahekal breathes laid back vibes and the beach perfect boho style and architecture.  Additionally it offers the convenience of being set in the downtown unlike the far flung beaches of Tulum.
