Catrina Sirena – A Tribute to the Trees by Sol Tamargo

La Catrina Sirena is my most passionate personal project. It is a photoseries that shows my personal representation of the mexican icon for the Day of the Dead.

In my stories La Catrina represents Mother Nature, coming as a woman from the other side, the “Dead” side, to enjoy Life for “Just One Day”

She wants us to truly “see The Magical World we still live in. She brings an awareness message, she points us to see beauty and magic.

This year was extra special as I was invited to be a speaker bringing La Catrina Sirena, to Russell Browns Creative Pabellon at Adobe Max.

I had not only to bring La Catrina Live this year meaning putting the team together, creating the outfits and actually going out, our down! underwater, to shoot La Catrina, with the special theme : A Tribute for the Trees. I also had to review all my material and come up with how to present her at the Convention.

“Magical things happened while both processes happened:

• I realised this 5 years La Catrina has been moved by the Elements, each year there has been a predominand “element” in the energy and theme of the images, arriving to EARTH for 2019. Making it so coherent with my own Journey as a Creative Spirit, I spent many days deep in the Rainforest, which strengthen my connection to EARTH and the TREES. And gave me the EARTH, to ground the ideas for what was necesary for the different shoots with different models this year

• EARTH gave me STRENGHT  I truly felt Mother Nature possesing  me to become LA CATRINA, I “Saw” the roots of a special tree I have wrapping my legs, all nerves about standing out and giving a performance including dancing in front of attendes at Adobe Max as La Catrina was being “born” … faded away.

• La Catrina Sirena showed me how I am experiencing a deep transformation, a dramatic evolution, I am calling it: “From Butterfly to Alebrije” not only feeling I can fly! but I am feeling so many colorful emotions and spiritual awakenings in this moment in my life that lead me to connect La Catrina to the Power of the Elements and is moving me to use my art as a Healing and Awakening Tool at the service not only of my own spirit but to those that resonate with my visual poetry.

• Found in me a darker ART, richer in colors, the visual design came to me in visions and I found a more organic styling and editing this year. More “Earthy” more introspective also with tons of deep green the color of Nature.

En mis historias La Catrina se muestra en escenarios naturales, mayormente bajo el agua, por eso lo de sirena, Ella esta aqui para traernos un mensaje de “notar la vida, la magia, de poder sentir, a traves de los sentidos.

Este ano fue extra especial pues La Catrina fue invitada a presentarse al Pabellon Creativo de Russell Brown en la Convencion de creatividad en Adobe Max.

Esto represento que no solo tuve que organizar y realizar las sesiones de este ano, desde disenar los vestuarios, crear el maquillaje con el tema : Un tributo a los arboles. Sino revisar todo el material de anos anteriorees y pensar como presentar a la Catrina ante los artistas asistentes a la convencion.

La realizacion de ambas cosas me hizo darme cuenta de cosas magicas:

• Me di cuenta de que los elementos han estado muy presentes en el concepto y en los visuales de cada edicion de Catrina Sirena, cada ano alguno parece predominar, llegando a La Tierra en este 2019. Totalmente conectado a mi propia evolucion y momento creativo. Este ano tuve el regalo de pasar tiempo en la Selva lluviosa, admirando majestuosos arboles y conectadisima a la Tierra. Encontre un arbol en especial donde forme un vinculo y esa energia de conexion me dio la vision para que este ano el tema fuera “Un tributo a los arboles”

• LA TIERRA me dio la FUERZA y la energia que aterriza los proyectos, claramente “Vi” como raices de ese arbol que conecte me ayudaban a tomar fuerza, raiz y conexion con La Tierra. Cualquier nervio o inseguridad que hubiera sentido antes al pensar en exponer en publico incluyendo salir bailando vestida de Catrina con un Arbol en la cabeza frente a los asistentes al Taller en Adobe Max…. desaparecieron!!

• Al Analizar la Evolucion de La Catrina a traves de los anos me di cuenta “De mi Propia Evolucion” y de la profunda transformacion que mi espirtu esta experimentando . Este “descubrimiento” del uso de los elementos en el proceso creativo de la Catrina, y la conexion cada vez mas profunda mas espiritual de mi corazon con mi arte . El deseo de usarlo para Sanar, para crear conciencia, para comunicar la magia de la vida. Siento que me estoy transformando de “Mariposa a Alebrije” … ya sabia puedo volar, ahora descubri nuevas cualidades en mi espirtu que me llevan a encontrar nuevas ideas, nuevos impetus de vida.

• Encontre tambien un “Arte mas oscuro” mis imagenes se ven “Mas magicas” mas introspectivas,  mas organicas, mas TIERRA con el verde de la Madre Naturaleza.

“La Catrina arrives and “I become” her. I transform. I feel through La Catrina, who for me is “Mother Nature.” I become her channel to communicate a message of Life on the Day of the Dead.” I felt the Magic of her presence through me and the necessary vision, creativity , persistence, ART to make all this come to life. THAT IS MAGIC FOUND IN ME!!

Con la llegada de la energia de La Catrina, me convierto en ella . Encuentro en mi la magia necesaria para traerla a la vida!,  la vision, la creatividad, la persistencia el ARTE. Me di cuenta ESO ES MAGIA!!!  sentir el fuego, el poder imparable de la Creacion a traves de mi.

“Through me the whole plan is put together so that the Catrina has a woman’s body and helps us remember that “we are still here.” We’re here on this side, where there are the senses and the Four Elements.”

“Y asi a traves de mi, Sol Tamargo, la Artista, el plan magistral es puesto en accion y La Catrina consigue : El escenario y el cuerpo de mujer para comunicar su mensaje: ” Humanos!! Aun estan aqui, de este lado de los vivos! donde a traves de los cinco sentidos pueden usarse los elementos”

FIRE: Is the element of PASSION , as an Artist feeling FIRE propels me to action! I feel excited and my energy is super high, I fall in LOVE with the project and this energy carries me to perform through the whole process,

FUEGO: Es el elemento de la PASION, como artista sentir PASION me lleva a la ACCION, me emociono con mi proyecto, mi energia esta altisima y me lleva hasta completar todo.

La Catrina tuvo que atravesar FUEGO para venir al mundo de los vivos, y lo represente usando una doble exposicion en algunas imagenes donde se ve el universo, “Es el Universo” imagen por el gran artista de Cancun Robert Fernandez astrofotografo quien amablemente me la presto para que yo pudiera representar esta idea visual uniendo en Adobe Photoshop ambas imagenes como una misma. Esta idea desperto un nuevo fuego en mi, al entusiasmarme por empezar a jugar mas con este tipo de fotografia artistica.

Decidi representar el Fuego tambien en la foto misma con el Copal encendido, siendo sostenido por La Catrina, como la fuerza de vida, La Madre Naturaleza que lo ofrece a la humanidad. Use tambien algunos objetos reflejantes para obtener en camara los efectos de reflejos de luz

La Catrina had to come trough FIRE to come to the world of the living, creating a composite in Adobe Photoshop, I merged an image of the Real Universe, by famous Cancun artist Robert Fernandez, astrophotographer who kindly allowed me to use it to represent the journey of La Catrina from “the other side”, this new process of double exposure kind of image awoke a new kind of Fire in me, whishing to play more with this kind of creative photography.

I also represented FIRE with the Copal being hold by La Catrina, she represents Mother Nature, Life itself and FIRE is the beggining of Creation.

AGUA! El Agua me hace Creer en la Magia! Y como no si nomas de entrada “puedo volar!” El Agua es el elemento de las emociones, y al APASIONARME con la Catrina, usando el agua como su elemento, su fuerza es como una cascada imparable.

El agua hace volar mi imaginacion!!! Puedo ver otros mundos a traves de su espejo, mientras escucho el latir de mi corazon. En el agua me siento mas presente que en cualquier otro lugar

WATER Is the most playful element. Makes me believe in Magic! How not to if in water I can fly!! Water is also the element of emotions. Making my PASSION so grand to create, like a powerful waterfall.

Water sparks imagination!! I can see other worlds through her mirror, I can listen to my own heart beat I can feel more present when I am in water than any other place. – Sol

“WIND is the element of though, of sharing ideas and communication. Trees communicate trough the wind, and so did I , using my wind, my power of convincing to bring along the team of artist to help La Catrina come to Life”

“Wind also changes direction, and can bring a powerful storm. Energy super important while creating, usually things can go wrong, and one must be able to change direction, to use intelligence “The mind” to adapt so the show goes on”

“VIENTO” es el elemento del pensamiento, de las ideas y la comunicacion. Indispensables para la realizacion de cualquier proyecto. Curiosamente en chamanismo se cree que los arboles se comunican a traves de las copas , sus hojas cantan con el viento y mandan todo tipo de mensajes.

“El viento tambien tiene la cualidad de cambiar de direccion y el poder de traer una gran tormenta. Este tipo de energia es muy valiosa en cualquier proceso creativo, donde las cosas muchas veces no resultan de acuerdo al plan y uno debe poder cambiar de direccion, adaptarse y mantener la misma fuerza”

EARTH

“I need the Earth to ground myself. The roots are essential to make any creative project a reality. Your Fire, Air and Water need Earth to manifest in the matter of any creative madness.”

“Necesito Tierra para “Aterrizar” mis ideas. Enraizar conceptos es indispensable en cualquier proceso creativo. Organizarse, hacer el plan de accion, sentir “La solidez” del proyecto. Eso lo da la TIERRA.

De manera practica, nomas acostarme en ella mi vibracion se equilibra y mis pensamientos se ordenan. Que tal abrazar un arbol! Eso siempre me relaja y me ayuda a tener claridad.

“Trees are Sacred. And they also represent EARTH. All around the world and throughout history we can find legends of their magical energies. To me, trees are connectors of energy and between realms of existence: The Infraworld or underworld, this reality, and the heavens.”

“Los arboles son sagrados y tambien representan TIERRA”.  Alrededor del mundo y a traves de la historia encontramos leyendas de sus magicas energias. Para mi los arboles son conectores de realidades. El cielo, la tierra y el inframundo.

Mi conexion extra especial este ano con ellos, me llevo a cerrar este viaje por los elementos con La Catrina, con el elemento TIERRA y un tributo a los Arboles.

El diseno del tocado del arbol de la vida, es la representacion de esa conexion energetica desde nuestra raiz, la tierra, con el cielo a traves de los elementos.

HUMANOS! HUMANOS!! Se han dado cuenta del Poder de los Cuatro Elementos a su alcance? Un pajarito me dijo que “Lo dan por sentado” y se les ha olvidado. Es mi deber recordarles! Yo solo tengo 1 dia al ano para SENTIR LA MAGIA DE LA VIDA. Ustedes siguen aqui. De este lado donde todo late y todo vibra.
