A Cenote Wedding Where Everyone Had Something to Give

For Matahji and Agustin, October 10 represented the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. They chose to celebrate that new beginning surrounded by the people who had been part of their journey.

The Ceremony of Giving

Matahji and Agustin’s cenote wedding ceremony was designed around them and the people they love. They wanted their guests to experience something more than simply witnessing their love story.

The ceremony became an exchange of blessings, centered on reciprocity. The couple gives; the guests give.

Their guests didn’t just bring their love. They were invited to turn that love, their prayers, and their wishes into something physical. Something they could hold, share and become part of. Nobody left empty-handed.

They gave their guests jars of love

Matahji and Agustin prepared jars filled with things that held special meaning to them. Each one contained hand-picked healing stones and crystals, including obsidian and rose quartz, along with sand from the beaches of the Riviera Maya.

Each jar was thoughtfully assembled as a gift of love and kindness. During the ceremony, Sofia, our spiritual guide, blessed the jars before they were given to each guest.

These weren’t simply wedding favors to take home. They were part of the ceremony itself. A small piece of the couple’s intentions, their love, and the place where they chose to marry. A detail that serves as a reminder and a blessing to their friends and family every day.

The Earth gives to us. We give to each other.

There is something beautiful about giving a gift made from the Earth itself.

Stones, crystals, and sand. Simple elements of nature that Matahji and Agustin chose to represent something meaningful to them.

Sofia explained that, in the ceremony, the Earth represents abundance and generosity. From a single seed, the Earth can produce thousands of fruits, each carrying more seeds. It gives, and what it gives has the potential to grow.

These little jars carried that same idea.

The couple gathered gifts from the Earth, added their own intentions, and shared them with the people they love. Each guest received something blessed, something personal, and something connected to the place where their marriage began.

And perhaps that’s the most beautiful part of the symbolism. The blessing doesn’t end when the ceremony is over. It travels home with everyone who received one.

“Ninguna flor se guarda su aroma.”

No flower keeps its fragrance to itself.

These were the words from Sofia, our amazing shaman and spiritual guide, when she explained the meaning of generosity in the ceremony.

A flower doesn’t hold back its fragrance. It shares something of itself with everything around it. And during Matahji and Agustin’s wedding, their friends and family were invited to do something very similar.

Each guest received a handful of flower petals. But before showering the couple with them, they held the petals close to their hearts, taking a moment to offer their own prayers, wishes, and intentions for the marriage.

Something invisible, like love or a heartfelt wish, was given a physical form. Something they could hold in their hands and eventually give away.

And when Matahji and Agustin shared their first kiss, those wishes were released together in a shower of petals, surrounded by cheers of “¡Vivan los novios!”

The couple had given their guests a blessing to carry home.

The flowers became more than flowers. They carried the love of everyone standing there. The ritual echoed the symbolism of a unity sand ceremony with the individual contributions coming together as one shared blessing.

A Ceremony That Gives Something Back

Every couple brings a different story, and the more we learn about them, the more opportunities we have to create something that actually means something to them.

That’s what I love about designing these cenote wedding blessing rituals alongside our spiritual guides. We take the couple’s ideas, their beliefs, their relationships, and the things they hold close, and find ways to bring them into the ceremony.

For Matahji and Agustin, it was about generosity. Giving something of themselves to the people they love, and inviting those same people to give something back.

The jars went home with their guests. The flower petals fell into the cenote.

But the blessings went both ways.

And that’s something we think is totally worth carrying home. Elements that make this ceremony designed for them and very personal to Matahji and Agustin. That is why a cenote wedding is filled with blessing rituals. Details that were added with a specific intention and meaning so deeply personal to the bride and groom. Details that connect the guests to the ceremony in a way that includes them as participants vs only being spectators.
