This is Sian Ka´an biosphere and Cayo Culebra. In Mayan, Sian Ka’an means ‘Origin of the Sky’ or in Spanish, ‘La Puerta al Cielo’ – translated in English to “Door to the Heavens”. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Mexico’s largest protected areas. Located on the Eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the State of Quintana Roo. Some 528,148 hectares of intricately linked marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems, this reserve is by far one of the most amazing places we have ever seen. The Sian Kaan has 120 kilometres of coastline, the property covers over 400,000 hectares of land that is incredible habitat for all kinds of coastal wildlife and endemic species.

The Sian Kaan reserve boasts diverse tropical forests and palm savannah. The region has one one of the most pristine wetlands in the state. Its lagoons and extensive mangrove are one of the reasons Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is so prolific. The comparison of the Caribbean ocean next to that of the biosphere is notable in these aerial photos.

The Colors of the lagoon compared to the colors of the Caribbean form a yin and yang harmony in nature. The separation of colors is magical and very inspirational to photograph. The textures and patterns I see remind me of a “Yin and Yang” of biodiversity where magic happens when they join together. The formation of the Barrier
